Downtown West Palm Beach is knee deep in development of both its commercial and residential corridors. Amid high rise construction, moving trucks, concrete workers, is a daily processional of dog-walking millennials, pensioners, employees rushing to grab lunch, and of course the young and the restless on their way to several shops and eateries popping up throughout the area. One noticeable gathering at the tail end of Evernia Street made me stop and peak into what I discovered to be one of Palm Beach County’s best bakeries!
Café Sweets Bakery, located 410 Evernia Street #108 West Palm Beach FL 33407, is a whimsically decorated bakery featuring Southern-style pastries, a variety of flavored cupcakes, an assortment of delicious pies, traditional and custom-made cakes, tarts, cookies, croissants and beverages. Owner Sharlyn Davis has truly outdone herself with this local favorite, putting her New York Art Institute Culinary pastry chef training to the test.
I sampled several items. The standouts were the Treasure Bar that came with chocolate chips, walnuts, coconut, all over a graham cracker crust; the Lemon Bar, made with an incredible custard reminiscent of a chess pie; the fudge brownie, and an assortment of different cupcake flavors. Oh, and how could I forget her mini pies, which includes a mini sweet potato pie that had me and our media director, cameraman Korey about to fight on the sidewalk until I realized I was a big black man with dreads yelling on a downtown West Palm Beach high end neighborhood.
The main event of the bakery would be the cupcakes. Each flavor is fluffy, moist, soft and extra flavorful. The German Chocolate, Red Velvet, Peanut Butter, Fudge Brownie and Cheesecake Cupcakes were my most memorable.
So now you must be wondering how I judge cupcakes and other baked items. (Well, I have extensive experience in eating cupcakes, as seen by my lack of abdominal visibility.) First thing you want to look for is what I like to call bite-ability, which is the cake to frosting ratio. Café Sweets ratio was perfect. Just enough icing and cake into your mouth for an orgasmic experience. (Btw, “cake in your mouth for an orgasmic experience,” should never be uttered outside of the realms of this article!)
Next, you want to look at whether the flavor, type and texture of the frosting and whether those components marry the cake. The frosting MUST compliment the cake. Café Sweets nailed it with a frosting that has a buttercream base and a smooth, creamy and velvety texture. I absolutely hate when the icing has sugary pixilation and you taste coarse specks of sugar.
Finally, the size of the cupcakes here were just right to fit the cake in your mouth without leaving all that cream and frosting all around your lips. (Ok, this article is difficult for me to write describing this stuff like this, so I’m going to go ahead and end this right here.)
Café Sweets is a bakery with amazingness through and through. It is worth a visit and even an hour drive, which is what I have done from Miami on at least five occasions. Make sure you try her cookies, key lime and pecan pies as well. My absolute favorite was the peanut butter cookie. The key lime and pecan pie were pretty much a tie. It’s just too hard to pick my favorite, so I usually get multiple items. Not a bad strategy, since it’s nearly impossible to go wrong with any item at this amazing bakery.
