The mention of Anthony Hamilton’s name conjures up warm feelings of rhythm and soul. Naturally, because as one of today’s most beloved R&B singers, his authenticity is a throw-back to yesteryear that also endears him to discerning Millennials who know good music when they hear it.
What folk might not realize is that Hamilton’s expression of soul extends to a love affair with food steeped in African American traditions. While music will forever remain an integral part of this soul man’s repertoire, Hamilton has expanded his creative expression by sharing the role food played in his development as a singer, songwriter, father and more in his new book, Cornbread, Fish ‘n Collard Greens.
The Grammy-winner will sign copies of his book when he joins celebrity chef Carla Hall at the Miami Gardens Food & Wine Grand Tasting and Honors on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 7 pm at Reign Restaurant and Cocktail Bar, 9940 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines. “Miami Gardens is determined to bring our residents, visitors and out of town guests a wonderful opportunity to not only enjoy delectable food, wine and innovative cocktails, but also a great chance to support some of the city’s finest restaurants,” said Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert.
The MGFWF will also feature Angela Yee, whose insightful interviews can be heard balancing out the male energy from her co-hosts, DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God, on The Breakfast Club radio show that features fascinating discussions with celebrities, authors and thought-provoking leaders. Yee is also the owner of a Brooklyn juice bar called ‘Juices for Life,’ catering to health lovers looking for a quick and easy way to get their daily fresh squeeze. She has developed ‘Drink Fresh Juice,’ an organic on the go selection of cold-pressed juices.
Yee will join DJ Khaled’s former Chef, Chef Deboryna “Dee” Hodges, and Vegan Chef Jenn Ross on Friday, Aug. 30 at Lorna’s Bar and Grille, 19752 NW 27th Ave in Miami Gardens for The Art of the Black Bartender: A Speakeasy and Tapas Experience.
This year’s Miami Gardens Food and Wine Festival has been expanded from a single day to four days of creative culinary experiences taking place in and around the city of Miami Gardens. Curated by The Hungry Black Man (Starex Smith), the festival captures the synergy surrounding black businesses and provides the community the perfect opportunity to have an amazing time while showing their support.
“I am hyped to bring my love of our community, our food, our music and drinks to the beautiful city of Miami Gardens. This is an event people will be talking about when it’s over and looking forward to next year. I am determined to present a quality event for a very deserving city to show that we can represent just like other major destinations like Atlanta, Detroit, New York and D.C.,” Smith shared.
