Pizza Brain, located at 2313 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125, serves up above average, delicious round pies (a Neapolitan-New York hybrid). We ordered a whole pie, but half and half. One half was the Henrietta Blanch Pizza was served with mozzarella, aged provolone, fennel sausage, banana pepper, roasted red pepper, grana Padano and fresh basil. Very tasty with fresh ingredients making themselves known in every bite, but the crust on this side of the pizza was burned, which impacted the flavor of otherwise delicious pie.
The other side didn’t have any crust issues, so we enjoyed it a lot more. The pizza was foldable and the real benefit is the beautiful balance of flavors. The cheese, sauce, and toppings all work together intelligently to create a one, two, punch type of bite.
The spot has a pizza museum that’s really cool for the kids, so make it a family night outing if you find yourself in the area. Be forewarned that the museum smells like a hospital or nursing home, likely from all its old figurines and stuff. Definitely a turn-off, but if you wear your trusty Covid-19 masks, you’ll be fine.
As for the staff, they weren’t terrible, but gave a “hurry up and buy” type of vibe. Also, while they offered an apology for our burned pizza, they did not do anything to fix it. True customer service would have included replacing our burned pizza, offering a refund or something beyond an apology, but none of that happened. I was disappointed and will definitely mention it to the management next time we visit the area. I would have this time, but we were entirely too busy on our tour.
Burned crust notwithstanding, I’ve very excited to discover amazing Black owned artisanal pizzerias churning out authentic and delicious Italian forward pizzas 🍕! This is yet another delicious option that is co-Black owned.
Oh, one of our followers raved about the vegan pizza, which we didn’t try, so I can neither confirm nor deny her claims. I look forward to hearing your feedback about Pizza Brain in the comment section. Check them out online at www.pizzabrain.org or call them at (215) 291-2965.
